The best spot to get a half decent wave is up towards West Coast between Samegawa river and the last of the underwater concrete swell breaks. This is open flat beach that breaks on almost all swell sizes - probably better at swells around 1 - 1.5m.

In 2005 and 2006 this stretch of coast was a regular surf destination. After surfing it was a joy to have an onsen and watch the waves from the rotemburo and later from the restaurant. Sleep over night and have a hot bath before getting into the wet suit and paddling out in front with out having to drive anywhere.

I heard that in the past this stretch of coast produced very very good beach break waves on a regular basis however Pork Barrel Politics have resulted in the beach being lined with huge concrete platforms that break up the swells and act to protect the beach. Each platform is about 50m long with about 25m between each of them and run nearly 1km. These are easy to spot as each end of each platform has a huge yellow light tower to warn off ships.

Occasionally a heavy swell will hit at just the right direction and create a rideable wave.
