Live Web Cam A friend owns "4BEACHEs" car park at Onuki, he's keen to have a camera and will provide the power, now we are just looking for someone to fund it. Its a super popular beach so wont be giving any secrets away and this will be a VERY well watched camera (great place to put your business LOGO) if you can help us out email us at admin@surfinginjapan.com Daily Photos None as yet Local Information & Recommendations Photo Map Click the link below to view our interactive map with photos and information of the break and surrounding area. (All photos are Located using GPS coordinates for pin point accuracy) General Break Information Onuki Beach is a very wide very flat beach with a HUGE free car park - incredibly popular its probably the most crowded beach in Ibaraki. - Great people watching. Lots of beginners, boogie boarders and long boarders in the water. Almost any swell will break along here but the waves also quickly close out as they get a bit of size. The Japanese guide lists 6 breaks all beside each other - no need to follow this as they are all the same except for where you park. the more southern end of the beach is a good hike from the big free car park and usually the parking here is ¥500 per day - it comes with a few home comforts, toilets, showers security, viewing platforms and best of all smaller crowds. The bottom of the whole beach is sand and the winds are offshore WNW. Because of the flat contour of the sand bottom the sand bars are often pretty uniform and its tough to find a sand bar generating good quality waves, just got to get lucky with the swell and the tide. Having said that it can get good - I have surfed it once in solid double overhead waves (6-10 foot wave faces) and it was really good fun and punchy. In these conditions there were more watchers not he beach than surfers. I guess the best conditions are SE swells of 1.5m, 9-12 second wave period, and light WNW winds. Summer is short and hot so its fine to swim and surf in a bikini or trunks and summer winds are warm. Winter however is COLD January and February thick rubber, boots, gloves and hat. Just nearby is a big Pool complex with water slides. Or a shopping mall - Outlet - with discounted surf brands and other wear and beach goods Access: Head up the Higashi Kanto past the Narita Airport to the end, head out to the coast road (Route 51) and head North about 30km, Beach breaks all along this stretch of coast so worth checking a few out on the way. Or go up the Joban highway and take the Hitachi Sea Park Exit then swing south on Route 51 and that takes you straight to Onuki. Comment: If you go to Onuki make sure you park at "4BEACHs" and ask for Akihiro the owner, he will look after you, Hot shower, Clean Toilets, Wood Deck and a Container with a sofa on top for superb all round views of the line up. He's OK with camping overnight and speaks good English. This is one of his stickers.
