General Break Information
Chitose is a well known location and popular for visiting surfers from Tokyo and Kanagawa. It is a sandy beach about 500m long that is open to the South around to the North East which gives it the biggest swell window of the Southern Chiba beaches.
As with much of Southern Chiba, these breaks are sandy rock reefs, this season 2010 there is so much sand coverage its almost tough to know the rocky reefs are there. At low tide they become much more visible and the waves to the north break right in amongst submerged rocky outcrops.
Chitose does get some good waves and obviously these reefs help create them. The waves break right up and down this stretch and vary depending on the tide and swell direction.
As is common in Japan the further you walk the smaller the crowd even if the waves are better down the beach.
The main point at Chitose is in front of an old blue and white house sitting on the beach side of the road with lots of parking. This is
, owned and run by a local mama san. ¥ 500 for parking includes showers, toilets, Garbage bins, undercover seating and a 2nd floor deck with views up and down the coast and of the surf right out in front.
Access:
1hr 20 mins on a wednesday morning at 3.00am through the Tokyo Aqua line.
